Research Directions in Wireless and Mobile Systems

 

Abstract:

Wireless and mobile systems are growing at a breath taking pace and are influencing the way people live and interact. The pervasiveness of mobile computing is being felt not only by the business, but also by each household. The characteristic of anywhere, anytime, any device access to information is a reality and future of mobile computing seems to be very promising. In this presentation, we summarize research work being carried out at UC in some important areas, including:

  • Coverage and Reachability in Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs)
  • Data Aggregation in a Sensor Network
  • Query Processing in Sensor Networks
  • Experimental test-bed for CO Monitoring
  • Key Management and Security for Wireless Ad Hoc Networks and Sensors
  • Efficient Use of Cognitive Radio
  • Air Time Fairness for IEEE 802.11 Multi-Rate Networks
  • Analytical Model above Packet Level for 802.16 Wireless MAN

Biography:

Dharma P. Agrawal is the Ohio Board of Regents Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and the founding director for the Center for Distributed and Mobile Computing in the Department of Computer Science. During Autumn 2006 and Winter 2007, he was on sabbatical leave as a Visiting Professor of ECE at the Carnegie Mellon University. He has been a faculty member at the N.C. State University, Raleigh and the Wayne State University. His current research interests include resource allocation in wireless mesh networks, query processing and secured communication in sensor networks, environmental monitoring using sensor networks, effective traffic handling in integrated wireless networks, and use of smart directional antennas for enhanced QoS. He has published several books and over 480 papers. His recent co-authored textbook on Introduction to Wireless and Mobile Systems published by Brooks/Cole, has been adopted through the world and has been reprinted in both China and India as well as translated in both Korean and Chinese languages. His second co-authored book Ad hoc and Sensor Networks- Theory and Applications has been published by World Scientific in Spring 2006. He is an editor for the Journal of Parallel and Distributed Systems, founding Editorial Board Member, International Journal on Distributed Sensor Networks, International Journal of Ad Hoc and Ubiquitous Computing (IJAHUC), International Journal of Ad Hoc & Sensor Wireless Networks and the Journal of Information Assurance and Security (JIAS). He has served as an editor of the IEEE Computer magazine, and the IEEE Transactions on Computers and the International Journal of High Speed Computing. He has been the Program Chair and General Chair for numerous international conferences and meetings. He has received numerous certificates from the IEEE Computer Society. He was awarded a "Third Millennium Medal," by the IEEE for his outstanding contributions. He has also delivered keynote speech for six international conferences. He has been named as an ISI Highly Cited Researcher and is a Fellow of the IEEE, the ACM, the AAAS and the World Innovation Foundation.
