Part 1:

In the first part I will present CSX - a sparse matrix storage format that aims to optimize the sparse matrix-vector multiplication (SpMxV) kernel. The SpMxV kernel scales poorly on shared memory systems with multiple processing units due to the streaming nature of its data access pattern. An effective method of improving SpMxV's performance is to drastically reduce the data volume involved in the computations. CSX implements a generalized approach to compress metadata by exploiting substructures within the matrix.

Part 2:

In the second part, I will briefly present a view on the landscape of parallel programming languages, focusing on directions, trends and challenges.
