The partnership will result in the donation of Freescale’s ARM® Cortex™-M4 based Kinetis microcontrollers (MCUs) based around the Freescale Tower System combined with the CodeWarrior software development suite to equip the Informatics Computer Architecture Lab. Freescale experts will also be available to provide lectures, project and presentation support at the university to help ensure that students and professors are always up to date with the latest embedded products and industry and industry trends.

The Freescale Tower System provides a flexible development environment for the students in Informatics to significantly enhance their skills in embedded systems and develop conceptual and practical applications within the University.

In a market where machine-to-machine technology is set to reach $290 billion by 2017, the partnership will provide students with a unique opportunity to develop on leading platforms, potentially enhancing future career prospects in an industry driven by innovation.

"This is an excellent opportunity to team up with one of the world-leading providers of embedded platforms and enables our students and to use Freescale's state-of-the art industry-standard equipment for our new Embedded Systems course,” said Prof. Mike O’Boyle, director of the Institute of Computing Systems Architecture in Informatics.

“We are delighted to open this new teaching lab at the University of Edinburgh’s School of Informatics,” said Flavio Stiffan, responsible for Freescale’s University Programs in the EMEA region. “It will help prepare the students for better careers. These kind of long-term partnerships are critical to support the future of our local and international partners and customers with skilled young engineers.”

The Freescale Tower System

Freescale's modular development platform can save months of development time now and in the future through rapid prototyping and tool re–use. Interchangeable and reusable modules along with open source design files make it easy to customize your design and reduce low level design, providing more time to focus on differentiated solutions. Sold in kits or as individual modules, the expansion of the Tower System from a development tool into a development platform is simple and cost-effective.
