Installing security-relevant software updates is one of the best
computer protection mechanisms available to end users.  However, users
do not always choose to install updates. To find out what the software
update experience looks like for users, I elicited software update
stories from 307 users and conducted a manual content analysis of the
story content.

I found that the amount of work and available information at different
stages of the update process have a strong impact on update decisions.
Issues such as the reputation of the update, the resources it uses,
bugs, and the expected disruption all contribute to users' update decisions.
