While benefits in terms of increased productivity, reduced error rates and greater satisfaction make usability important for telemedicine systems, the costs associated with performing pre-deployment usability studies often make them infeasible. This results in usability problems which, as observed in our previous work, may lead to different degrees of inefficiency and dissatisfaction to the users of the system in different deployment contexts. By means of an illustrative case study, this talk will show how we could use observations of simulations of a user working with a telemedicine system, with varying workloads and system characteristics, to predict the efficiency of the system in each of its potential deployments. It will also describe the first steps taken towards validating this work. Our approach might prove useful for the roll-out of large telemedicine system implementations, as the ones currently planned throughout Europe.
