Bidirectional transformations, from a dependently-typed perspective

The definition and study of bidirectional transformations (bx), as well as languages tools and techniques to implement them, have emerged from a number of disciplines, including databases (in the guise of the view-update problem), model-driven development, interaction design (e.g. in MVC) in the last 10-20 years. Notable contributions have been made by Benjamin Pierce and colleagues in the study of so-called lenses, as a distinct strand of PL research.

An outsider to the discipline may well be bewildered by the variety of scenarios which have been described and definitions and properties proposed, for specifying and analysing bx in general. At their heart, however, lies the idea of a "consistency relation" between two data sources, with a bx being a specification of "consistency restoration" following changes to one or other side.

In this talk, I 'll give a definition of "abstract consistency restoration" in terms of functions with dependent types, and show how standard, desirable, properties of bx are expressible in these terms. I'll also attempt, if time permits, to show how some existing, and not obviously comparable, definitions in the literature are instances of this definition.
