I'll talk about some of my recent research that applies process algebra to model residential smart grids. A smart grid consists of both consumers and producers of electricity and utilises the available information to make decisions about energy use. In a residential setting, individual houses can obtain energy from the wind and sun, but may generate more than can be used within the household. The models consider redistribution of excess energy between groups of houses and investigate how policies lead to a reduction in usage of grid energy.
