Ray tracing is a simple, physically-based way to produce 3d graphics. It is also widely acknowledged to be quite computationally demanding, preventing it from being used in real-time graphics. I'd like to take advantage of the next lab lunch to challenge this belief, and show how some simple partitioning algorithms and nice heuristics, together with a careful implementation, allow to produce semi-realistic images of teapots and other models at near-interactive rates.
