Title: Applying Research Ethical Approval and R&D from NHS for researchers in Informatics without permanent UK residency: Problems and Solutions

In the United Kingdom (UK), all medical research involving people has to be approved by an independent Research Ethics Committee (REC) to protect the rights and the participants.

For my research, I needed to conduct semi-structured interviews with patients, healthcare professionals and caregivers from National Health Service (NHS). Thus geting approvals from REC and Research & Development (R&D) from NHS are essential for my research. Being a Chinese and an Informatics researcher who has no medical research experience in the UK, there were quite a few problems I have encountered.

In this talk, I will present the problems I have encountered as a non-medic researcher who was seeking these approvals from a non-permanent UK resident’s point of view. Also I will talk about my personals solutions to tackle all these problems.
