Solid-state drives are now routinely used for persistent storage in both consumer and enterprise-level storage solutions.  In the first part of this talk I will describe the challenges of incorporating solid-state drives into the storage hierarchy.  Perhaps the biggest challenge is their I/O asymmetry: writes are more expensive than reads.  This presents challenges for firmware and software developers and requires rethinking existing data management algorithms.  In the second part of the talk I will describe some of our work in dealing with these problems.
