Lab Lunch Talk by Garrett Morris

— filed under:

This talk will draw a shaky parallel between the rules of scoring in competitive foil (and saber) fencing and session types, an approach for typing communicating processes. To this end, I will give: a brief overview of fencing; a somewhat historical but mostly folklore justification of the scoring system in foil and saber fencing; and, finally, a hand-wavy discussion of encoding said system using session types.

Title: Touching on Session Types

Abstract: This talk will draw a shaky parallel between the rules of
scoring in competitive foil (and saber) fencing and session types, an
approach for typing communicating processes.  To this end, I will give:
a brief overview of fencing; a somewhat historical but mostly folklore
justification of the scoring system in foil and saber fencing; and,
finally, a hand-wavy discussion of encoding said system using session
types.
