Registering as a student for the first time

This How-to is intended for: All Students

A brief guide to registration and matriculation for new students, with links to further information.

Registration and Matriculation

On arrival your first priority should be to register formally with the University, this is the first step in matriculating (the official administrative act of becoming a student of university).

Please note that you must register in person at either Pollock Halls, Adam House or Old College (depending on your start date) on or after the attendance date shown in your formal offer of admission.

During fresher's week (14-18 September 2009) you must register at Adam House during one of the periods specified for Science & Engineering students. Please refer to the Registry guide for further details (see below).

You will need to take with you:

  • a printout of your unconditional offer from EUCLID (if your offer is still conditional you will not be able to register)
  • Photocopies of all documentation about your funding, e.g. the official award letter.
  • Your passport (if you are from outwith the UK/EU).
  • One passport-sized photograph (if you have not already applied for a Student Card directly via Card Services)

Induction

After registering with the University you must then register with the School of Informatics to allow us to confirm your attendance (the second step in matriculating) and receive a brief introduction to the School of Informatics.

Please contact the graduate school office to make an appointment, you should note it is not possible to register with the School before the attendance date shown in your offer of admission.

As well as confirming your attendance we will be able to:

  • provide you with a DICE computer username and password if you do not already have one;
  • show you the desk you will be working at and issue the key for the room you will be studying in; and
  • issue you with the first instalment of your scholarship (if paid via the School).

Welcome Session

An introductory welcome session will be held for all new postgraduate research students on the morning of Tuesday 15 September 2009, at 10.00 am in the McEwan Hall, Teviot Place. We hope you will find the session both relevant and of interest, whether you are coming to Edinburgh for the first time or continuing from undergraduate study here. The session has been arranged jointly by University staff with responsibility for postgraduate affairs and the Students’ Association, who have also organised an informal reception at 4.30 pm in Teviot Row House, to which you are cordially invited.

If you will be attending either event please email susan.hunter5@ed.ac.uk using the subject title “Freshers’ Week PGR”.
