George Campbell Hay was one of a small number of brilliant poets who started publishing  work in Gaelic around the 1940s.  He coupled this with an enviable  facility to pick up other languages.  He wrote poetry in Gaelic,  Lallans,  Norwegian, Icelandic and French; in addition he translated many poems by others into Gaelic from various languages.  However this brilliant start was blighted by mental illness from the end of the second world war onwards, probably triggered by an assassination attempt while stationed in Greece (where he leant to extend his knowledge of Homer to include Modern Greek).

His first book of poems Fuaran Sléibh (Mountain Spring)  was published in 1948.  A copy of it was recently found in a charity bookshop.  This has turned out to be one of the poet's own copies and is very heavily annotated, unlike other copies known to be his.  I will discuss the evidence for this claim and some of the contents of the annotations.  I will also provide some further background about the poet.
