In this talk I will describe two approaches to the challenge of managing sensitive personal data.  The first approach is based on a formal method of privacy protection called differential privacy.  Differential privacy offers, to each participant in a dataset, a rigorous and precise guarantee that their data will be protected.  But for analysts seeking to study personal data it means that query answers must be perturbed and that they must accept a limited "privacy budget" to devote to their computations.  This budget can be exhausted, after which they cannot access the database.

The second approach allows participants in the database to disclose their personal data in exchange for financial compensation.  This more recent approach would be adopted in the context of a data market, in which query answers have a price and are released only to buyers willing to pay for them.  Some of the rigid restrictions imposed by the standard protection model can be avoided by the market-based approach.  I will discuss the new challenges of fairly and consistently pricing queries over personal data in this setting.
