Perdita Stevens: Musings and rants on modern educational trends

I will talk - in an informal, not very considered way, don't quote me! - about my experiences as a student on Coursera's MOOC (that's Massive Open Online Course, for anyone not up with the jargon), Statistics One, from Princeton. I may witter about my opinions on the implications of the MOOC movement for the future of bricks and mortar universities such as ours. Coming down to earth: a large part of my motivation for signing up for Stats 1 was to feed into ideas I had about how to rewrite Software Engineering with Objects and Components, the UG3 course I'm teaching this semester. In contrast to a couple of our courses that have reintroduced for-credit coursework this year, I am teaching SEOC with no for-credit coursework for the first time. This decision is closely intertwined with other decisions I've made about how to present the course, and despite the genuine problems that have led to the reintroduction of for-credit coursework, it is my opinion that for-credit coursework will soon be seen as an anachronism. I'll explain my thinking about this and say something about how I think SEOC's going so far.
